BVLGARI’s signature style emerged in the dolce vita era
Dolce vita is a term that carries with it a lot of opulence and glamour. It refers to a time in Italian history when social change and economic growth pushed people to become more creative and independent. In this era, Rome was the sexiest and most glamorous city in the world, and residents lived lavish and sophisticated lives. Many of them were artists, writers, poets and intellectuals. They were often seen in opulent outfits and lived in luxury villas. This trend inspired the creation of many bold jewels, including Bulgari’s signature Serpenti creations.
Bvlgari’s origins date back to 1857, when Sotirios Voulgaris was born in Epirus, Greece. He later moved to Italy and opened his first store on via Sistina 85 in Rome. A few years later, he married Eleni Basio, a native of the Aromanian village of Paramythia. Their sons Constantino and Giorgio eventually took over the family business. These brothers incorporated their father’s creativity into their own styles.
The 1960s was a golden age for Bvlgari. At that time, the brand had already begun to make more jewelry and more watches. It also began to experiment with different variations of the Serpenti motif. In addition, it rediscovered its logo, which features a sinuous snake. Today, the house of Bvlgari pays tribute to the city of ancient Rome. BVLGARI’s designs are inspired by the architectural and cultural heritage of the Eternal City.
By the 1960s, women’s status had begun to rise in the workforce. Media had started to depict women as independent and strong, and the concept of femininity was changing. Feminism challenged gender norms and challenged power structures. Women began to be seen as “makers of meaning” and as independent. BVLGARI’s unique aesthetic approach combined a sense of fantasy with a subtle yet powerful blend of imagination and reality.
The dolce vita era came to life with films such as La Dolce Vita. This film, produced by Federico Fellini in 1960, captured the splendour of the Italian capital in all its glory. As the movie was released, it catapulted the Bulgari brand to international acclaim. Celebrities, fashionistas, and nightclubs were drawn to the flagship store in Via Condotti. Eventually, the brand opened boutiques in Monte Carlo, Geneva, and New York. Famous faces such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Anita Ekberg visited the brand’s stores and wore Bulgari jewellery in Hollywood films.
The third generation Bulgari family introduced a new creative boost in the 1970s. Their style embraced modern women by mixing Far East influences with Pop Art. They introduced versatile jewels that were created using precious metals and stones. The brand also launched a line of modular jewellery. With these innovations, Bvlgari now caters to a broad range of modern women.
As the brand expanded internationally, Bulgari began to produce more necklaces. One of the most notable pieces is the Mosaico necklace, which captures the magnificence of baroque architecture. The necklace consists of trapezoidal diamonds and round brilliant-cut emeralds. Also, the chain strap is gold and features a snake-like clasp.
