Patiala Necklace
There’s an old story about a diamond necklace that once belonged to the Maharaja of Patiala. The necklace is considered the most expensive piece of jewelry ever made.
In the 1920s, the Maharaja of Patiala approached the House of Cartier to make a ceremonial necklace. The necklace was completed in 1928. It included a 234.6 carat De Beers diamond. However, it also contained Burmese rubies and other gems.
The necklace disappeared from the royal treasury of Patiala in 1948. It’s possible that the necklace was stolen by the Indian Armed Forces. Or it may have been sold in Europe. Whatever the case, it should have been returned to India.
A secondhand jewelry store in London purchased part of the necklace in 1998. That portion, believed to be the centrepiece, was broken up into smaller pieces. At that time, the necklace was worth more than $30 million. But it would have been difficult to sell the entire necklace in India.
The Maharaja of Patiala had a love affair with European jewellery houses, so he approached Cartier. In 1925, he sent the head of the Parisian sales office to see a collection of stones that he wished to acquire. During the trip, he brought a trunk filled with loose gems. These were then fashioned into anklets and head ornaments.
After three years of work, Cartier created the magical necklace. When it was finished, the necklace weighed over 1,000 carats. It was set in five ladis, or tassels, with platinum chains that were encrusted in diamonds.
In the 1980s, the Patiala Royal Family auctioned some of their jewels. Their jewels included the ‘De Beers’ diamond, which had previously been the seventh largest diamond in the world. Afterwards, it reappeared at an auction in Geneva.
The ‘De Beers’ diamond was sold for a huge sum. Eventually, the necklace and the diamond disappeared from the world’s stage.
In the 2022 Met Gala, actress Emma Chamberlain wore the famed necklace. She did so as a Cartier brand ambassador. As a result, the necklace became a focal point of controversy. People questioned its authenticity, and the internet sparked up with the question of where the necklace came from.
Diamond Choker
