South Korean actress Song Hye Kyo recently appeared in an opulent monochromatic ensemble at the gala of high French jeweler Chaumet. Her accessories, including a one-of-a-kind green necklace, matched her chic look perfectly.
The House of Chaumet has a 240-year history that includes an illustrious association with Napoleon and his second wife, Josephine de Medici. The tiara-shaped pieces they designed in this period helped popularize the tiara as a status symbol.
On the Water’s Surface
With its new high jewellery collection, Ondes et Merveilles de Chaumet, Maison Chaumet invites jewellery lovers to travel on and below the seas with boldly hued gemstones and enamel. This maritime themed collection celebrates the astrological number Cancer with 69 one-of-a-kind creations.
The dazzling pieces from this collection are designed to be worn for life, inspired by nature and the elements of the world around us. The collection is divided into nine chapters, each one bringing to life different aquatic bodies through rare coloured stones and pearls.
Jewellery from Chaumet is made to be cherished for a lifetime and celebrated for its unique style. The maison is located in Place Vendome, Paris, where its artisans have been hand-crafting its exceptional High Jewellery pieces since 1780.
In order to create their High Jewellery pieces, Chaumet’s skilled and dedicated craftspeople draw inspiration from nature and the elements around them. Each collection features a range of necklaces, rings and earrings, as well as watches and brooches that bring to life the elements in all their forms.
Water’s surface tension, which makes it hard for something to move through the liquid, is a result of the strong hydrogen bonds between water molecules (one hydrogen bond is between the oxygen of one molecule and another). The more bonds water has, the more cohesive it becomes.
As an experiment, try placing a paper clip on the surface of water and see how it stays there. You should be able to feel the pressure that the water exerts on the clip, and you may be able to see it bend slightly under the weight of the clip.
You could also try dipping the water into soap and seeing how the surface of the water behaves. A bit of soap can help make the water more slippery, which could cause the paper clip to slip off the surface and sink.
Explain to students that the reason they can see the paper clip stay on the surface of the water is because of something called surface tension. Unlike other liquids, water has a lot of these strong forces at its surface.
Gulfstream

In the 1980s, a young American named John Paulson bought Gulfstream Aerospace and began making major changes. He turned the company into a manufacturing center, reversing the traditional assembly process and replacing it with one utilizing a variety of new manufacturing processes.
Under his leadership, revenues increased significantly. The GS II (which had been a successful predecessor) was replaced by the Gulfstream IV, which earned the distinction of being the first large-cabin, long-range business jet. It was a huge success, and with a backlog of sales that the company had to meet, production continued until 1987.
During this time, Gulfstream was acquiring a number of additional plants outside of Savannah. In 1981, it acquired a 400,000-square-foot plant in Oklahoma City.
At this point, the company had produced more than 200 GS IIs. This was an important moment for the brand, as it had become the leader in the long-range jet market.
It also marked the beginning of a broader product line for Gulfstream, as it started producing the G550. This was a supersonic, world-class corporate jet that would reduce flying time from New York to California by a third. The GS IV, which was developed in collaboration with the Sukhoi Design Bureau of the Soviet Union, was also on the horizon.
The company was also entering the international military market. Its SRA or Special Requirements Aircraft was used by air forces all over the world, including Singapore, Israel, and Italy.
Breaking Wave
Inspired by the fluidity of a breaking wave, Deferlante is the latest high jewelry collection by Chaumet. The luxury brand rethinks eight of its signature pieces in this new series. These range from transformable jewellery designs to a tiara and a secret timepiece.
The tiara resembles a waterfall carved in diamonds, while another piece features a tumble of stones figuring seafoam and drops of water. All of the pieces in this dazzling collection are trimmed in white gold and a combination of brilliant-cut and step-cut diamonds.
A three-row necklace captures the fluidity of a wave, with a pear-shaped diamond of 3.57 carats. A tiara in the same hue, with a 1,600-diamond motif, looks like a wave cresting on the forehead.
“Water has always been one of the key elements for us,” said Jean-Marc Mansvelt, chief executive officer of Chaumet. “We love movement, a moment captured.”
In fact, the house’s first-ever High Jewellery collection is dedicated to the sea. ‘Ondes et Merveilles de Chaumet’ is a celebration of the water’s many aspects.
‘On the Water’s Surface’ and ‘Gulfstream’, both part of the Deferlante collection, capture the rhythm of the ocean in diamonds and white gold. This set of must-haves starts with a necklace and then expands into rings, a bracelet, brooches and earrings.
Deferlante is a further extension of the Torsade de Chaumet collection, an extension of the 2021 ‘Torsade de la Grande Mère’ series and a homage to Joseph Chaumet’s fascination with movement. It rethinks a number of iconic motifs, notably the Carnation Diadem and the Scottish Knot.
While ‘Gulfstream’ subtly captures the warm Atlantic wind, ‘Breaking Wave’ encapsulates the power and grace of waves in diamonds and white gold. A tiara shaped in a single wave is accompanied by two sets of earrings, each with an accompanying ring.
The ‘Breaking Wave’ collection is a true ballad of the sea, with delicate yet bold character. The collection is a must-have for any beach-loving woman and includes a tiara, a transformable ring, two pairs of earrings and a secret watch.
Escales Parure
The sea has long been a source of inspiration for Maison Chaumet, which has always paid tribute to the water in all its multifarious forms. For its latest high jewellery collection, Ondes et Merveilles, the house has dedicated an entire collection to the sea for the first time.
Matching the aquatic astrological number representing the star sign Cancer, this collection brings to life diverse underwater bodies through various rare coloured gemstones. Through nine chapters, the Ondes et Merveilles collection takes us to all four corners of the world, translated by stones that bring all the nuances of the seas.
One of the most stunning creations from this collection is the Escales Parure, which comprises a necklace, ring and pair of earrings in white and rose gold. Its thalassic theme is represented by the marquise-cut diamonds of different sizes set in fringes of natural pearls, as well as by the Paraiba tourmalines evoking translucent waters.
This sculptural piece also features three 2.19-carat marquise-cut diamonds sporadically engraved on the collar, symbolising boats docking in a marina. The 96 rare Afghani emeralds in this necklace, which total 62.3 carats, are distinguished by their elongated shape and a unique shade of green tinged with a delicate yellow tint.
It is a striking example of the modern jewellery making its mark on Paris Haute Couture Week 2021. As part of the Sous les etoiles (Heavenly Dreams) collection, this necklace depicts Comet 41P, known for its blue-green glow, by setting precious gem and diamond baguettes in graphic lines.
These lines are echoed in the faceted diamonds that surround each emerald. The resulting effect is dramatic and striking, especially when paired with the white diamonds that form the border of the necklace.
