Maison of Joseph Chaumet
The Maison of Joseph Chaumet’s signature flower is the hydrangea. The flower was chosen as the Maison’s official flower by Beatrice de Plinval and Claire Deve-Rakoff, as the flower was born in the Land of the Rising Sun. The designer chose this flower to honor his mother, the French artist Hortense de Beauharnais. The collection pays tribute to the iconic beauty of nature with its many shades of love, ibotanical inspiration, and dazzling sparkle.
The Maison of Joseph Chaumet is part of the LVMH Group, with more than 80 boutiques worldwide. Its collection reflects the brand’s exemplary savoir-faire. It promotes sustainable sources of gems, following the Responsible Jewellery Council certification system. It also participates in the Kimberley Process to guarantee the ethical origin of rough diamonds.
Chaumet is renowned for its exquisite jewellery. During the 19th century, it started manufacturing precious timepieces. Using the expertise of its craftsmen, Chaumet has collaborated with renowned Swiss watchmakers to create exceptional timepieces. In 1811, Eugene de Beauharnais commissioned a pair of bracelet-watches in gold. This pair of bracelet-watches featured an intricate watchmaking movement. The tiny dials were placed in the center of the gold bracelets.
The Maison of Joseph Chaumet’s expertise is based on centuries-old craftsmanship. Each creation represents more than 2,000 hours of labor by artisans. The workshop at Maison of Joseph Chaumet is an incubator of creativity and innovation.
The inspiration for Chaumet’s creations comes from Empress Josephine, the Empress of France. Her love of flowers and gardens inspired the designers of the Maison of Joseph Chaumet. This collection translates her love of flowers and gardens into the most exquisite jewelry. Featuring a hydrangea design, the collection also asserts Chaumet’s naturalistic style. Hydrangea flowers have petals of infinite variety.
The Maison of Joseph Chaumet has been making fine jewelry for two centuries. Its collections have included bridal sets, engagement rings, and tiaras. Founded in 1780 by Marie-Etienne Nitot, Maison Chaumet was a popular Parisian jeweler and has since been the official court jeweler of the French Empire. It was the first jewelry house to open a shop on the Place Vendome in 1812. The Maison of Joseph Chaumet is now owned by LVMH, the luxury goods giant.
In addition to jewelry, Chaumet also has jewelry that tells time. Its Josephine Aigrette watch challenges the codes of watchmaking and offers an original and stylish everyday wear. Its feminine shape and unique strap embrace the wrist in a distinctive way. The creations of Josephine inspire love, and brides and grooms can choose diamonds or colored stones as their wedding rings.
Maison of Marie-Etienne Nitot
The Maison of Marie-Etienne Nito is synonymous with the classic elegance of French fine jewelry. Nitot founded the maison in 1780 and soon became the official court jeweler for the French Empire. She created tiaras for the royal family and other high-profile individuals, including the renowned Josephine de Beauharnais. Nitot’s designs have stood the test of time with daring innovation and a dedication to the beauty and glamour of the romantic era.
After the French Revolution, Nitot served as the court jeweler to Napoleon I, designing and making magnificent pieces for the Napoleonic court. She also worked with Napoleon’s son, Frans’ois Regnault, to re-establish France as the center of luxury. As a result of her work, she was patronized by many royal personalities, including Napoleon and Empress Josephine de Beauharnais.
Fossin’s passion for naturalist styles and romantic styles influenced her work. She also created pieces inspired by Italian Renaissance and French 18th century art. These creations won over the high society of the time. Among her many famous clients was the family of Louis-Philippe who succeeded Napoleon. Another famous client was Anatole Demidoff, the Russian prince who was married to Princess Mathilde Bonaparte.
Inspired by the Empress Josephine’s love for flowers, Chaumet Maison artisans created the Jardins de Chaumet range of jewelry inspired by the natural beauty of flowers. The Hortensia pendant features a delicate 42-cm chain with two adjustable rings to make it easier to wear. The pendant is embellished with two four-petal flowers with diamonds and a deep green malachite.
Chaumet House has designed hundreds of pieces of jewellery in its nearly two centuries of existence. The maison also participates in initiatives to help the pieces’ true value be recognized. Since 1980, Chaumet has set up a museum for their collection. The museum has around 200 objects including original invoices, drawings, and diadems. The museum regularly organises exhibitions and events based on their collections.
